Highlights of the CRT 648 color sensors

CRT 648 color sensors - integrated display

Glossy surfaces often present challenges for optical sensors. The new CRT 648-32.G color sensors overcome this with an integrated polarization filter, ensuring dependable detection even on reflective objects.

Another common challenge is accurate color recognition when object brightness varies with distance. The CRT 648 series address this with an advanced brightness evaluation and autocorrect function, enabling consistent, distance-independent color detection at ranges of up to 65 mm.

The status of the switching outputs, current color value, or signal quality can be intuitively selected and viewed on the large integrated LC display with keypad.

When multiple product variants need to be tested within a single system, up to seven color settings can be stored on the sensor and evaluated simultaneously.

Thanks to its large operating range, a single sensor can be used for various tasks—offering greater flexibility, accommodating increasing product variation, and reducing the need for additional sensors and setup time.

The new CRT 648 series color sensors can be configured either remotely via cable teach-in or, more conveniently, through IO-Link. In addition to simplifying format changes, IO-Link unlocks a range of advanced features:

  • Timer functions for switch-on/off delay and pulse suppression
  • Integrated object counter for real-time tracking of production quantities
  • Live RGB color value output for real-time signal monitoring
  • Access to extended diagnostic data such as temperature, signal quality, and switching frequency

CRT 648 Color Sensors Use Cases

Challenge: Cereal bowls must be sorted by color before being packed, ensuring only identical colors are processed at a time.

Solution: The CRT 648 series, capable of learning up to seven colors, reliably detects both bowl and lid colors using a large light spot. With an operating range of up to 150 mm, it ensures consistent detection—even during format changes— effectively identifying and sorting out incorrect or defective items.

Challenge: Defective vials, such as those missing caps, must be reliably detected—despite the challenge posed by high-gloss surfaces.

Solution: CRT 648 color sensors with luster suppression accurately detect shiny vial caps, ensuring process stability. Quick setup and adjustment are enabled via the large LC display.

Challenge: At an assembly station, the connector color must be identified to trigger the correct test sequence, followed by checking the color and intensity of rear lights—without interference from ambient light or operators.

Solution: One CRT 648 sensor verifies the connector color, while a second sensor checks the rear light’s color and brightness, ensuring reliable, automated inspection in both steps.

Challenge: Automatically match strap color to varying carton colors on a conveyor.

Solution: CRT 648 color sensors detect the carton color and relay it to the strapping machine, enabling automatic selection of the correct strap color.
