New generation SD-Gateway for Enhanced Productivity
The latest version of fieldbus gateways for Schmersal’s SD-Bus system now supports the Profinet fieldbus protocol. This SD-Gateway enhances availability, simplifies integration and commissioning, and features an integrated web server for added convenience.
Increase availability with Profinet
With Schmersal‘s SD-Gateway for their SD-Bus, users have been able to benefit from high-performance fault diagnostics. This, in turn, has helped increase machine and plant productivity by minimizing downtime and simplifying commissioning and maintenance.
Now, Schmersal has further expanded the functionalities of its SD-Gateway, enabling the data from connected safety switchgear to be transmitted not only via EtherCAT but also through the widely used fieldbus protocol Profinet. This significantly enhances system availability.
Streamline Diagnostics with SD-Interface Technology
The SD-Gateway with Profinet (SDG-PRN-RJ-CC) features an integrated web server, providing an event log, in-depth diagnostic tools, and the ability to control devices directly and teach an SD chain. Additionally, the device includes a microSD memory card, enabling the following functionalities:
- Event logs can be evaluated in real time via the web interface.
- Comprehensive diagnostic data from all safety switchgear devices are displayed in plain text within the browser window.
- Devices such as interlocks and control panels can be controlled directly through the web interface.
- The microSD card allows event logs to be exported for evaluation and long-term storage.
- The configuration of the series connection is stored on the microSD card, ensuring seamless device replacement in the event of an error.
Benefit from Lean Wiring and Easy Setup
An additional and significant benefit of the SD-bus system is preserved in this SDG fieldbus gateway: by connecting sensors and interlocks in series with the SD-bus (the SDG can communicate with up to 31 safety switchgear devices), this safety solution enables exceptionally lean wiring and reduces costs without compromising Performance Level (suitable for applications up to PL e).
The setup and commissioning of an SD installation have been designed to be as convenient and straightforward as possible, with all devices automatically receiving addresses from the Gateway.
SD-Gateway compatible with SD-I-U gateway
The new generation SD-Gateway with Profinet is compatible with the SD-I-U universal gateway, although the corresponding device description file must be replaced when integrating the device into the subordinate PLC.
The SDG-PRN-RJ-CC is compatible with all safety devices with SD-Interface: Interlocks (AZM 201, AZM 300), Electronic Sensors (RDD Type and CSS Type) and Control Panel BDF 200.
How does SD-Interface Technology Work?
Electronic safety devices with an SD-Interface transmit comprehensive status and diagnostic data to a higher-level machine control system. Data from serially connected switchgear is sent via the SD-Bus to the SDG fieldbus gateway and then forwarded through the fieldbus to the machine control unit. This enables the seamless communication of error messages such as overtemperature warnings, faulty actuator alerts, and invalid actuator combination messages.
The diagnostic information is transmitted independently of safety signals. Warning notifications allow for controlled process shutdown and targeted maintenance, helping to prevent unexpected process interruptions.
