Choose from a great variety of optical sensors

With optical sensors you can detect or count objects without contact, measure distances, and detect colors, gloss or luminescence using light. If special fiber-optic cables are added, you can use them in extreme conditions such as cold, heat or limited space.

There are two main groups of sensors available, Switching Optical Sensors and Measuring Optical Sensors. They include many different types of sensors for a great variety of purposes.

Reliably detect presence/absence of objects

Leuze optical sensors

Switching optical sensors detect whether an object is present or not present. Their usually simple technology means low cost, easy start up and normally no media contact. You can choose among:

In through-beam photoelectric sensors, the transmitter and receiver are housed in separate housings. When an object breaks the beam of light emitted from the transmitter and aimed directly at the receiver, the receiver’s output changes state. This most efficient sensing mode results in the longest sensing ranges and highest excess gain. It enables you a reliable use in foggy, dusty, and dirty environments e.g., in monitoring of production and packaging lines, fill measurements through transparent containers, protecting dangerous areas for automatic doors, etc.

In retro-reflective sensors, the transmitter and receiver are housed in a single enclosure. A target is detected when it breaks the light beam between the sensor and a special reflector. These sensors provide you the ideal sensing of glossy or shiny objects, as well as detection of clear object in applications such as the packaging and printing industries.

In diffuse mode sensors that detect an object diffusely, the transmitter and receiver are housed in the same housing. They are easy to mount, and their sensing distance ranges from several centimeters to several meters. The intensity of reflected light, operating stability, and sensing distance vary with the conditions (e.g., color and smoothness) on the surface of the sensing object.

Fiber-optic sensors use optical fiber either as sensing component or to relay signals from sensor to the signal-processing electronics. As they are immune to electromagnetic interference and do not conduct electricity, you can use them in environments with high voltage electricity or flammable material. They can also withstand high temperatures. These sensors have been established as a measurement technology in different fields, e.g., material science, civil engineering, light-weight structures, as well as chemical and high-voltage substations. Very often, mechanical quantities such as deformation, strain or vibration are requested.

In fork optical sensors, transmitter and receiver are housed in a U-shaped enclosure. They boast a high switching frequency and a particularly fine and precise light beam. This allows for the reliable detection of very fast processes. They will come in handy for you especially in detection of small objects, speed measurement, ejection control, positioning tasks, counting of objects.

Switching light curtains detect objects with infrared light in a large detection field They respond if sensor beams in the field are interrupted. They operate on the principle of multiple through-beam sensors whose output signals are interlinked. The transmitter and receiver are enclosed in separate housings. Various resolutions and measurement field lengths enable you a reliable use in a variety of applications. You can use them for projection monitoring, free field monitoring and object detection.

Provide a variety of measurements

Measuring optical sensors provide a variety of measurements in addition to detection of presence or absence of an object.

The spatial coherence of laser light provides superior optical properties (low divergence) when it comes to measuring specific points; ideal in long-distance range-finding applications. LEDs offer the widest range of key performance indicators (KPIs) when it comes to indoor distance measurement tasks and applications. They are eye-safe and have a light form factor, making them practical and easy-to-use sensing solutions.

You can choose:

Measuring light curtains detect and measure objects with infrared light in a large detection or measuring field. If the light beams are interrupted, the sensor is switched. They operate on the principle of multiple through-beam sensors whose output signals are evaluated individually. The transmitter and receiver that are enclosed in separate housings are available with different measuring field heights and beam distances. These devices are suitable for a variety of measurement tasks with various resolutions and can be integrated in different fieldbus environments.

Optical distance sensors use laser or LED light to measure distances quickly and precisely on a wide range of materials, even at large ranges. The distance measurement is based on the triangulation principle.
