Industrial Stepper Motors and EtherCAT Drivers

Stepper motors and EtherCAT drivers from R.T.A. are the perfect combination for reliable drive of industrial motors. There are various models of stepper motors, motor drivers, as well as a combined units of a stepper motor with an EtherCAT driver available for your automation applications.

EtherCAT for fast and reliable operation

EtherCAT Drivers communicate with other devices via the EtherCAT protocol, ensuring fast and reliable operation. This protocol was developed to connect devices in automation and industry, providing a high enough speed to connect both I/O units and motion systems.

EtherCAT drivers operate in different modes, e.g., the Profile Position (PP) and Cyclic Synchronous Position (CSP) operating modes and in different variants of Homing. They can drive stepper motors with or without an encoder, in an open or closed loop. They also have built-in I/O units. Drivers use voltages from 24 VDC to 230 VAC, depending on the size of the stepper motor.

Select the perfect EtherCAT driver for your application:

CSD ET driver is the basic EtherCAT driver, developed to drive stepper motors from R.T.A. and SANYO DENKI. It is small and compact and supports microstepping. It features voltage range 24-48 VDC and drives smaller stepper motors with currents up to 4 A.

PLUS ET EtherCAT driver drives slightly more powerful motors with currents of up to 6 A. The X-PLUS ET driver can be plugged directly to the 110/230 VAC. It can also control up to 86 mm stepper motors with a 920 Ncm torque.

FLEX-DRIVE EtherCAT driver is a very compact driver that is only 17 mm wide. It supports PP, CSP, and CSV operation modes and Homing. No programming is required, all settings can be made via EtherCAT. It features a separate power supply for logic and stepper motor control.

Wide range of the Industrial Stepper Motors

Industrial stepper motors are designed for use in the harsh industrial environments. These motors feature robust housing and a robust M12 connectors. M12 connectors are used for stepper motor connection and for the encoder. Encoders feature resolutions of 400 cpr or 4000 cpr, with or without an index signal.

Choose right industrial stepper motor for you application:

  • The smallest industrial stepper motor
  • Flange size: 42 mm (NEMA 17)
  • Holding torque: 29 Ncm or 80 Ncm
  • Larger industrial stepper motors in a more robust IP54 housing
  • Flange size: 56 mm (NEMA 23), 86 mm (NEMA 34)
  • Holding torque: 165-920 Ncm
  • Large, robust IP65 housing with a special oil seal on the shaft
  • Flange sizes: 56 mm (NEMA 23), 86 mm (NEMA 34)
  • Holding torque: 170-900 Ncm
  • Motor length: 89.5-150 mm

All-in-one stepper motor & EtherCAT driver

Combined unit - stepper motor and EtherCAT driver R.T.A.

The combined unit unifies the stepper motor with encoder and the EtherCAT driver.

The system is compact, the driver is in a metal housing mounted on the stepper motor. The functionalities of this driver are the same as in a standard EtherCAT driver.

The system is designed for more advanced applications that require the detection of the motor synchronization loss. It also features an electronic solution for smoother operation of the driver itself.

Exploit the benefits of EtherCAT

EtherCAT is fast, reliable, easy, flexible and accessible communication technology, suitable for use in industrial applications.

As it is a standardized open source technology, anyone can implement it.

The development of EtherCAT is provided by an EtherCAT Technology Group.

Meet the advantages of EtherCAT

EtherCAT advantages

In EtherCAT, devices process Ethernet packets by reading the data addressed to them and at the same time writing the data back to the packet as it travels across the device. This means better bandwidth utilization in the communication itself.

EtherCAT is the fastest industrial Ethernet technology precisely because of the way data packets are processed. Ideal for motion applications, various measurement applications and remote I/O units. Communication via EtherCAT also puts less strain on the CPU controller.

EtherCAT is flexible in setting up a network topology. The line topology can be extended to a ring topology, offering additional flexibility such as redundancy. All we need is a master device with a different Ethernet port. This also allows the devices to be switched off during operation.

EtherCAT can be configured in such a way that it automatically assigns addresses to devices, which means that there is no manual configuration. The low load on the bus and the possibility of connecting the devices to each other enable greater resistance to external interference. The system enables accurate and fast network fault detection. Since the protocol is not based on TCP/IP, there is no need to administer MAC and IP addresses, nor is the configuration of network switches and routers required.

EtherCAT enables FailSafe over EtherCAT (FsoE). It is used through TŰV certified devices. The protocol meets the requirements for SIL3 and is suitable for both centralized and decentralized control systems.

EtherCAT brings industrial Ethernet functionalities for a lower price than a classic fieldbus system. Only an Ethernet connection is required on the master device. EtherCAT slave units are available from various manufacturers and are affordable. EtherCAT does not use CPU capacity. It also does not need network switches and other network equipment (and its installation), which means lower investment and maintenance costs.
