Stereo Cameras with Modular Application Software

Basler has expanded its 3D imaging offering with 5 models of Stereo Cameras featuring a comprehensive software package with six application-specific software modules. Use these cameras to reduce overall system costs and benefit from industrial-grade quality for vision-guided robotics in factory automation and logistics. Moreover, the modules are also suitable for the Basler Blaze time-of-flight (ToF) cameras.

Benefit from low system costs

The Stereo Cameras from Basler enable your robots to perceive their environment in real time. In creating this 3D camera series, Basler followed the idea of a plug-and-play computer vision solution that requires neither expertise nor experience in machine vision. In this way, you will be able to implement vision-guided robotic applications in your process automation.

They offer you 5 models of the Stereo Camera series and a comprehensive pre-installed onboard software package with six modules. These software modules are adapted to different robotics applications and can be individually selected. Thanks to onboard processing, you can integrate the cameras directly, without any external computers.

Performance characteristics

Selecting the camera that meets your specific requirements simplifies your 3D vision system, thereby lowering your overall system costs. In addition, you benefit from the industrial-grade quality for your vision-guided robotics in factory automation and logistics.

The stereo cameras from Basler feature:

The advanced digital stereo processing techniques are nowadays used as versatile tools to extract information out of three-dimensional input data. To process stereo data, the Stereo Cameras create:

  • Camera image; the left camera delivers the reference image for the image data set.
  • Depth image; the distance between the camera and the environment is computed through triangulation of the stereo image using the SGM methodology. It serves as input for point cloud generation and 3D reconstruction.
  • Confidence image; the confidence image shows the confidence in each measured value for further processing steps.
  • 3D reconstruction; calculated from the depth image without texture.

You need no previous machine vision experience or expertise for this computer vision solution. The user-friendly web interface of the Stereo Camera allows you effortless installation and intuitive use. You can also connect and configure the Stereo Camera by Rest-API, ROS, and GenICam.

Depth images are generated directly on the camera thanks to an integrated graphics card. From the depth images point clouds can be easily generated. Such external computing power redundancy is an ideal requirement for mobile systems.

The Stereo Cameras record their current position and alignment with the highest precision using the most advanced visual inertial odometry algorithms. When the cameras are mounted on a robot the direct integration into the control loop is possible due to the low latency.

Choose the Stereo Cameras that suits your needs best

The Stereo Camera versions feature 65 mm, 160 mm baselines and color or monochrome models:

Stereo Camera 65 color is particularly suitable for robot/arm-mounting due to its compact size. You can use it for e.g., pick-and-place applications that require color differentiation. It is available in a 4 mm (standard) lens variant.

Stereo Camera 65 mono is also particularly suitable for robot/arm-mounting due to its compact size. You can use it for e.g., pick-and-place applications in challenging lighting conditions. It is available in a standard lens variant.

Stereo Camera 160 color is designed for viewing distances >50 cm. It is particularly suitable for static mounting e.g., in a robot cell, or mobile applications that require color differentiation. It is available in a standard lens variant.

Stereo Camera 160 mono is also designed for viewing distances >50 cm. It is particularly suitable for static mounting e.g., in a work cell, in challenging lighting conditions. It is available in a standard as well as in a 6 mm lens variant.

Enhance your specific application with software modules

Basler Cameras application modules

To ensure even better performance of your robotic system, six 3D software modules are available to you. You can easily activate each module on any model of the Stereo Camera series. Each module is intuitively operated through the sensor’s standard interface. These modules are also suitable for the Basler blaze ToF cameras.

Choose among a variety of application software modules:

3D TagDetect Module for a robust detection of AprilTags and QR codes, which makes it a fundamental component for the efficient identification and manipulation of labelled objects, e.g., in pick-and-place applications.

3D ItemPick Module for robotic pick-and-place systems that operate with suction grippers. It calculates surface grasp points on given objects.

3D BoxPick Module enables the robot to detect the position, orientation, and size of stationary rectangular objects, and to place them in a defined position. It provides a perception solution for pick-and-place applications e.g., palletizing/de-palletizing and sorting of packages.

3D SilhouetteMatch Module enables the robot to detect the position and orientation of flat objects on a plane surface. You can easily activate this optional module to determine the 3D position and orientation of shallow objects in an unmixed scene on an even surface.

3D CADMatch Module enables the robot to reliably detect, localize and pick unmixed objects independent of the objects’ position and orientation, based on CAD data. With this optional module you can significantly increase the efficiency of your production processes, e.g., by automating machine tending.

3D SLAM Module is a key element of most mobile navigation applications. Namely, it provides accurate and drift-free localization without GPS.

Use Stereo Cameras in a wide variety of applications

Take advantage of industrial-grade quality for your vision-guided robotics applications in areas such as:

  • Logistics: indoor navigation of vehicles; loading and unloading of machines; depalletizing and palletizing
  • Industrial Automation: manipulation; assembly; inventory count
  • Agricultural Robotics: counting/forecast of the harvest; health analysis of plants; precise weed identification and removal
  • Service Robotics: collection and delivery services; support in everyday life; assistance in food preparation
